South London quintet Boil King have dropped their fantastic new single, ‘Minerva’. It’s an off-kilter track that places unsettling vocal melodies, delivered deadpan by Mike Hinchcliffe’s answer to the Joker, over a tense, almost unmoving accompaniment made up of swirling, hauntingly playful synths and a five-note bass line that is finally allowed to come out of its shell during the track’s dreamy conclusion. Hinchcliffe explains that the track “came from a place of chaos following the end of a very intense relationship. It's quite a carefree song that was written very quickly and without overthinking or overcomplicating the compositional process. The name 'Minerva' is a bastardisation of an Argentine slang term for a female, and I used it to represent a subject of one's unrequited affections.” The band’s debut EP, Green Whitaker, drops on July 5th, 2024.
